Keeping your room clean and tidy all the time might seem like a lot of work.
I know most of us are not big fans of cleaning our rooms.
We would rather cook or do the dishes, but not clean every day.
But trust me, it’s easier than you think, and is possible.
This is something I can proudly say I’ve mastered: my room is always tidy.
It’s a habit I picked up from my mother and aunts, even though a little later in life, when I started living alone.
Once you start living on your own, you are in charge of your home.
You take care of the kitchen, the sink, the trash, the bathroom, and how you set up your home.
You are responsible not just for how you feel about yourself, but also for how you feel living in your own home.
We pay so much for the ambience when we go out to restaurants and cafes.
But what about the ambience of our own home, where we spend the most time being our most real and unfiltered selves?
I truly believe that it’s not just the inner world impacting our outer world, but our outer world also equally impacts our inner world.
Whenever my room is clean and tidy, I feel so much lighter, calmer and focused.
A messy room, on the other hand, instantly kills motivation.
It makes you want to lie down, procrastinate, and scroll endlessly on your phone.
It’s a cycle we don’t even realise we’re stuck in.
But you can break that cycle without requiring tons of motivation.
I no longer dread cleaning. Instead, I enjoy it.
I had even written a post about this previously- Why I enjoy cleaning my home and not dread it
When nothing works, cleaning is like a soul reset for me.
And so today I want to share with you small habits that keep my room clean and tidy all the time.

1. Always make your bed
After you get up, brush your teeth and come back to your room, make it a habit to always make your bed if you don’t already.
This tiny habit might seem insignificant, but it brings an instant sense of order and accomplishment.
It’s a signal to the mind that you began your day with intention.
I don’t know how it affects you, but it affects my mind positively instantly.
If you feel lazy to make your bed, immediately notice your laziness and don’t let it win.
And if you think, “I don’t have time to make my bed,” let me remind you — it takes less than 5 minutes to make your bed.
Most of us spend more time scrolling on our phones first thing in the morning, so instead of grabbing your phone, take those 5 minutes to reset your space — and your mind.
P.S Here are other toxic morning habits to avoid
2. Smooth your sheets
Don’t just make your bed for the sake of it; also smooth your sheets and keep them clear.
A small touch that makes your bed feel inviting and tidy.
Also, don’t leave anything on your bed- like your laptop, your chargers, hair clips, bottles, etc.
Keep your bed clear.
3. Keep surfaces clear
This is something I ensure in my room. I leave nothing on my bed- no iron, no chargers, no books, no snack items.
Everything has a place, so why should I keep it lying on the bed?
Same thing for the table. My desk only has things that should be on the table.
After I finish reading, I keep them where they belong and always clean and organise my desk after I get up from it.
This hardly takes any time, but less visual noise means more mental clarity.
4. Keep dusting cloths close by
I always keep dusting cloths close to the table so it’s easy to swipe surfaces regularly without delay.
5. Keep a dustbin in your room
I have a small dustbin for my room.
I bought it because I noticed that sometimes I feel too lazy to go to the kitchen where my main dustbin is in order to throw wrappers, clothing tags, tissues and stuff like that.
Keeping a dustbin in my room saves me from being tempted to just leave wrappers around.
It might be just one wrapper or one plastic bag lying around, but it makes your space look visually untidy.
Keep a dustbin in your room if you haven’t already.
6. Keep a clothes rack for worn-but-not-dirty clothes
I have a clothes rack beside my bed, and it has helped me a lot in keeping my worn-but-not-dirty clothes in place and organised.
Instead of dumping clothes that I have worn in ‘the infamous chair’, I keep them in this clothes rack.
This is the kind of clothes rack I have.
This clothes rack is also another good option if you have space.
This clothes rack is just to keep the clothes that I am wearing at home out, so that I don’t have to open my cupboard every time.
Here’s what I hang on this clothes rack:
- Home clothes that I am wearing currently. So when I change them to go out for work or anywhere, my house clothes go in the rack so that I can easily find them when I come back home
- My Exercise wear that I am wearing currently, so that I can easily find it in the morning.
- My nightwear so that I can easily find it at night
- Back from work clothes (if they’re not dirty) to dry them out before I put them in my wardrobe again at night or the next morning.
- Towel
7. Only keep the clothes you’re wearing out
Make it a rule that you will only keep the clothes you are currently wearing out, maybe in your hanger or on a rack like I do.
Only keep these clothes out:
- The house clothes you are currently wearing
- Your nightdress
- Gym/ exercise clothes
The rest will go to the wardrobe or the laundry.
This rule and habit of mine help me avoid the chair pile and my rack from being overburdened by clothes I am not even wearing, and keep my room clean and tidy.
Plus, it makes it easier to wear my exercise clothes, and I don’t have to keep searching in the morning.
8. Fold your clothes as you take them off
For any clothes you’re not putting in the laundry or in the wardrobe, make it a habit to fold them as soon as you take them off.
Avoid throwing them on the bed, on the chair, or — worse — leaving them on the floor.
I’ve seen so many people do this out of habit, thinking, “It’s just one pair of jeans,” or “I’ll fold it later.”
But even one unkept item can make your room feel untidy, and before you know it, that one thing starts to pile up.
I also think that it is a practice of gracefulness by treating your clothes with care and folding them slowly and mindfully.
This way, folding clothes can also become a simple grounding exercise in daily mindfulness.
It’s a way of treating your belongings and your space with care.
Yes, you can always toss those clothes away and think, “What does it matter?”
“It is just me in my room”
It is easy.
But you can also notice that tendency, pause and fold your clothes with ease and presence without making it feel like a burden.
9. Use storage boxes and baskets
Identify two things:
- Items that are causing clutter and where mostly
- Items that aren’t getting a designated space which is causing clutter.
For example, if your makeup and skincare stuff are lying all over, you might need a makeup organiser to keep them organised.
If you have your stationery items lying around, then buy a stationery organiser.
I have a storage box where I keep my morning routine stuff in so that I can easily find my stuff in the morning in one space, and then also carry it around where I plan to sit down.
Using storage boxes, baskets, and organisers is key.
10. Have a place for everything
This is a simple rule to follow. Have a designated place for everything.
If it doesn’t have a home, it becomes clutter.
This habit is a must if you want to always keep your room clean and tidy.
The goal is to instantly be able to get things when you need them and not keep on searching for an hour at the hour of need.
11. Always return things to where they belong
Keeping things where they belong takes less than a minute.
After using your cup, keep it in the kitchen. Don’t let it remain in your room for days.
After you use scissors, keep them where they were.
When you dress to go out, after you change your home clothes, instead of throwing them on your bed or chair, keep them in your rack (if you are still planning on wearing them after coming back) or in the laundry if it’s dirty.
12. Clear your hotspots daily
Identify clutter-prone areas such as the desk, bedside table, and make-up space and reset them daily.
Keep them as they were after using something.
13. Never leave the room messy when going out
This could be a life practice- not leaving the room messy when going out.
I remember earlier during my hostel days when I used to live with two friends, whenever we would plan to go out, our room would look like a tsunami had come over.
There would be heaps of clothes everywhere from the three of us, and we would just leave them like that.
Then we would dread to even think of our room’s condition while we were out.
This is a habit I have left now, and I never leave my room messy except when there really is a time crunch.
Otherwise, if I don’t like what I wore the first time and need to change again, after I am all done, I will keep my unworn clothes back in the wardrobe or at least keep them folded on the side.
I love the feeling of coming back home to a tidy room. It brings instant peace, and I feel calm in my clean space, especially after a good bath.
Staying in a clean and tidy room = instant peace.
14. Do an evening reset
This is just to keep things back in order.
You might think it would take a long time, but it really does take less than 10 minutes to put things back in place.
If you continually make it a habit to put things where they belong, it might just take 5 minutes.
15. Declutter regularly
Also, declutter regularly. Notice where things are piling up.
If you don’t use it or love it, let it go.
P.S 10 Reasons why you need to declutter
16. Clean your floors 1–2 times a week
You don’t have to clean your floors every day. Just once or twice a week.
Final thoughts on how to always keep your room clean

A clean and tidy room isn’t just about how your space looks, but more about it’s about how you feel to live in it.
It’s about coming back to a space that supports you, soothes you, and holds you in your daily life.
Everything is energy. And like I already said, It is not just our inner world that affects our outer world.
Our outer world also affects our inner world just as much, without our knowing.
Keeping your room clean doesn’t require big efforts or bursts of motivation.
It simply asks for a little bit of mindfulness, a few gentle habits, and the willingness to care for your space the way you care for yourself.
So the next time you fold a blanket, dust a shelf, or put your clothes back where they belong, know that you’re doing more than just cleaning.
You’re choosing mindfulness over mess, and care over chaos.
So these were my tips on how you can always keep a tidy room.
I hope you apply them in your room and life.
