There are too many positive things said about habits. And yes, habits are important, but setting a healthy daily routine is even more important.
Without a good daily routine, your good habits will have no home and it will be tough to remain consistent.
But setting a good daily routine is like having a home for your habits. It is where your good habits stay and stick.
We all want to lead healthy, well-balanced lives. We want to get our lives together and live the lives of our dreams.
So if you want to do that, then you need to start with creating a healthy daily routine for yourself.
Tips to create a healthy daily routine
Table of Contents
1. Note down your Ideal Daily Routine
What would your ideal daily routine look like?
What are the things you want to add to your ideal daily routine? What habits do you want to add to your day? Make a list of that.
2. Divide your day
You can divide your day into morning, afternoon and evening or if you want- before work, during the day and after work and write down what you would like to do in the morning, afternoon and evening.
3. Manage your energy
Be mindful of when you have the most energy and when you have the lowest.
Since I have become a morning person, I find that I have the most energy in the morning and this is when I do the tasks and habits that require more focus and creative energy.
Whereas in the evenings, I just do easy tasks and habits such as going for a walk, reading, and doing other repetitive tasks that don’t require my creative focus.
4. Be realistic
I know you might want to add a lot of new habits and feel like all of them can be done, but you need to be realistic to not get discouraged.
5. Schedule and block time for your habits
Then for each of the habits you want to add to your routine, schedule a proper time for it and block your time. This helps you to actually get them done instead of waiting for motivation for when you feel like doing it.
6. Habit Stacking
Add your habits before and after what you already do.
This is called habit stacking. So if you want to start a new reading routine in the evening, do it before or after what you are already doing. For example, if you already have a prayer routine where you pray every
7. Create a consistent sleep and wake-up time
To stick to a routine properly, you need to have a proper and consistent sleep and wake-up time.
So Now that I have given you my tips, here is my healthy daily routine
My Healthy Daily Routine: A Day In My Life
My daily routine is divided into 3 parts- Morning, Afternoon and evening.
Morning Routine
My day starts at 6 am these days. Here are all the things I do step by step:
- I try to get up slowly without rushing and when I brush my teeth, I put on my air pods and listen to music to energize myself.
- Then I go and take a bath to feel even more fresh.
- After taking a bath, I come back to my room, change my clothes, moisturize my face, put on lip balm and comb my hair.
- I tidy myself and this makes me feel fresh and energized.
This I learned during Covid time- that we need to make ourselves feel good even at home. Not to be lazy to comb your hair or be tidy.
When you do just this in the morning- put just a little bit of time into making yourself feel tidy, it changes the way you feel and act. I am then ready to sit down with my morning routine.
- I write in my journal for 15-20 minutes.
- Do some writing till 9 am. While I write, I drink water and also my morning tea which sister makes after she gets up.
- After writing, I get up at 9 am and do Yoga for 30 minutes till 9:30 am. Currently doing Yoga With Adrienne-FLOW (It was Day 28 today)
- Meditate after yoga. It always feels so good to meditate after a good stretch and movement in the body. I meditate for 15-20 minutes.
- After meditation, I simply sit down in the same meditation pose, close my eyes and listen to some affirmations for 10 minutes before I begin my day. It’s around 10 am by this time.
I love this 101 Power Thoughts by Louis Hay and listen to it time and again.
- Pray/chant till 10:30 am
- Then get up for breakfast
- Give food to my cats and ready for work.
I have the privilege of going to work late as I work in a college. On most days, my classes begin at 11:30 and I live very close to my workplace, so there is not much rush and I can do my morning rituals with ease.
If your work starts early, adjust your morning routine and include the things that you’d like to do.
Give at least 60-90 minutes to yourself in the morning and that’s more than enough.
I have found that reading, writing, meditating, exercising, praying- any of such rituals in the morning helps us connect with ourselves and help us show up in the world in a much lighter and braver way.
When I spend my morning intentionally doing these things and when I don’t, they have a huge difference.
Anyway, at work, I take my classes and in my free time, I read or do some of my pending work or just keep it light.
Afternoon / Evening Routine
These days, work is light in college as only 2 semesters are going on.
I do not have to stay for 5 hours, so I am mostly back home by 3 pm.
When I am back home, I am greeted by my two cats Elsa and Ariel who are always by the door when they hear me coming and as I ring the doorbell.
- I cook after coming home from work and my sister helps me.
- We have our lunch late around 3:30 pm after I come back.
- After lunch, we (me and my sister) are currently watching an episode or two of the series- Panchayat on Amazon Prime.
- By the time it’s over, it’s around 4:30 pm.
- After watching an episode, I then take my afternoon/evening nap.
- I get up around 6 pm on most days feeling so relaxed and refreshed.
- After getting up, it’s time to get ready to go to the gym.
- Gym is from 6:30-8 pm
- Get groceries on the way back home and it’s around 8:30-9 pm by the time we’re back home.
Night Routine
- After coming back from the gym, I do some home chores like cleaning the kitchen, making dinner for my cats, cleaning their bowls, giving them dinner and brooming the house.
P.S Why I enjoy cleaning my home and not dread it. - I also talk to my mum on video call after coming back from the gym.
- I am skipping dinner these days to do intermittent fasting
- After all household work is done, I go to take my bath for one last time.
- After the bath, I moisturize my face, my body and my feet and do a little face massage.
This I do by listening to some affirmations or watching a short nice video on YouTube.
I recently came across this- (To be in Awe) and loved it
- After all the work is done, then me and my sister sit for prayer/chanting ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’ for 30 minutes.
- Then it’s time to go to bed and read for a while. Currently reading Pride and Prejudice for my night read.
- After reading, I finish off my day by writing down the best things that happened in the day, bless the things that happened in the day, bless the people I met and talked to and then go to sleep.
Each day, even though the same, is different. There are always different conversations, different people I talk with, different events and different feelings.
- These days going to bed by 11:30 pm.
The day is well spent.
So this is currently how I am spending my days and what my current daily routine looks like.
On weekends, there’s time for more cleaning, cooking, self-care, doing a hobby or going out somewhere.
Grateful for this time here on Earth.
