What To Do Instead Of Scrolling At Night
Nighttime scrolling can be especially tempting because you’re tired and looking for an easy way to unwind.
Instead of automatically reaching for your phone, try creating a simple evening ritual that helps you slow down.
You could take a warm shower, do your skincare, make a cup of tea, read a book, journal, stretch, pray, or simply get into bed a little earlier.
You don’t need to turn your evening into a strict routine either, because sometimes the nicest thing you can do is simply put your phone away and let the day end quietly.
Try The “One Real-Life Thing” Rule
You don’t have to completly give up social media.
You can simply make its use a little more difficult to enter.
Say by deleting the apps and using it from a browser. When you do that, its less tempting to keep on using it.
Then before you have the urge to scroll, pause and delay for another 10 minutes.
Then tell yourself that before you scroll, you will do one real-life thing first.
That can be:
- Read two pages of your book
- Make yourself a cup of tea
- Stretch for five minutes
- or anything from the list and other things.
You can still scroll afterwards if you want to, but you’ve given yourself a chance to make a conscious choice instead of automatically opening an app.
You Don’t Have To Be Productive All The Time
One important thing to remember is that replacing scrolling doesn’t mean you have to fill every spare minute with productivity.
You don’t need to clean your house, exercise, read, organise your life, or work on your goals every time you put your phone down.
You’re allowed to sit on the couch with a cup of tea and stare out the window.
You’re allowed to take a nap.
You’re allowed to listen to music.
You’re allowed to be bored.
You’re allowed to simply exist without consuming something.
Final Thoughts
There are so many lovely things to do instead of scrolling.
The next time you catch yourself scrolling out of habit, put your phone down and choose one small thing from this list instead.
I get surprised by how much better a few screen-free moments can make me feel and also realising all the things I do instead when I am away from my phone.
Don’t always fill your time with someone else’s content.
Make it simply belong to you instead.
