Is it really important to shift our mindset first if we want to change our money relationship?
You can read the post or listen to it here,
This post is from theli 5th episode of my podcast ‘Heart of Living’
5 money mindset shifts that will change your life
This is a continuation of the last episode where I shared my money story growing up and talked about what a negative money mindset and an abundant mindset look like.
If you haven’t listened to the episode yet, I would suggest you listen to that episode first and then this one.
Anyway, I told you in the last episode that I would be talking about the 5 main money mindset shifts we need to make if we want to change our relationship with money.
So let me get started with it straight away
So here I’d say that the first money mindset you need to shift is this
1. From having wealth is impossible to having wealth is possible
Shift your mindset that says, Having wealth is impossible to having wealth and abundance is possible for me
Most of us believe that we will never have enough, that we will always be in debt, and that having wealth is not possible at all.
It’s funny how we believe these limiting beliefs so wholeheartedly without a doubt that we keep on repeating these while speaking to our friends, family and mostly to our own selves.
We do this unconsciously but what happens is that this in turn becomes our reality.
- Because you believe money is scarce, money is always scarce
- Because you believe you can’t ever have more, you never have more
- Because you believe you will never get rid of debt, you haven’t gotten out of debt till now
- Because you believe you can’t afford a vacation, you haven’t been able to afford it.
I don’t mean to discourage you here, but what I am saying is that our current beliefs have shaped what actions we have taken till now and it shapes what actions we will take, thus shaping our future.
If our beliefs about money are so limiting, then it limits us from taking the right kind of action for changing our relationship with money because we just believe that this is how it’s always going to be and so we don’t dream and don’t try to change.
And here the only change we first need to first make is to change our money mindset and get rid of all these negative money beliefs and start believing and start reprogramming our mind saying and affirming that wealth and abundance are possible for us.
I really had to install this belief in me again and again and allow myself to affirm that I am worthy of my dreams and that I can dream safely and that everything is possible as long as I am still alive.
And this does not mean that we’re not satisfied. You can be satisfied, but not settle for less.
We can be satisfied and still try to broaden our vision
It’s not about wanting more, but about realising our full potential and enjoying what life has to offer, being able to do what our heart wants to do, and enjoying abundance in life because abundance is our birthright.
So stop believing that money and wealth is impossible for you and look beyond your current reality and dare to dream.
What you can do to shift your money mindset
What you can do for this is you can create a vision board for yourself that truly feels aligned with who you are and how you want your life to be.
You can print out an affirmation that you want to reprogram your mind to.
Look at all the beautiful places you want to visit, or anything you want to have, be and do and see yourself living the dream, see yourself doing it, holding it, walking in it, and loving it and just be really happy that it’s all going to be possible for you.
Don’t limit yourself with your limiting money beliefs by complaining about the lack in your life. I’d say, do anything but don’t complain.
Instead, try to change your situation and look for ways to make your dreams a reality. There is really no lack in this world If you look for it and if you believe you are worthy of it.
2. From money is scarce to money is abundant
Start believing with your heart that money is abundant in this world. Because it really is.
If money were scarce, then money should have been scarce for all, but it’s not. Money is abundant for some people whereas for some it’s hard to even make ends meet.
But I must tell you here, that it’s not a problem with money and it’s not that money discriminates against anyone. Money just flows to whomever it sees it is matching its potential.
Money flows to whoever believes first that money is abundant.
And so the money just hasn’t reached you, yet, because you haven’t tapped into abundance,
And how do you tap into abundance?
You tap it by having an abundance mindset because abundance first begins in the mind.
And even if you have less money right now, you can still have an abundant mindset.
1. Be grateful
When I was still a student and not working, and when my mother was still supporting me with her small income, we both, me and my mother still fostered an abundant mindset by being grateful for whatever we had and believing that there is a lot of goodness waiting for us.
My mother found my gratitude jar a few months back, which I had kept back in 2016.
I had totally forgotten about it, but I came to know that I had written little gratitude notes about being thankful for having a laptop because it allowed me to study properly, for my mother’s good health, gratitude for receiving kindness from strangers, gratitude for a good movie I watched and for all the little things.
Now when I look back at it, I truly believe that it was gratitude that changed my life and it was gratitude that sowed the seeds of abundance in my life.
So abundance starts with being grateful for what we have, for example, your job right now might not pay you well, but you must still be grateful for all the support it is offering you now, give your best and have the belief that you will land up in the job of your dreams.
2. Donate your money
Another way to foster an abundant mindset is to give away your money no matter how much ever you can for donations and have a lot of good intentions for donating money.
3. Create your own little ways of luxury and feel abundant
You don’t always need to have a lot of money to foster an abundance mindset.
You might not be able to go to fancy restaurants or all your dream places right away, but you can just bring home the food of your choice and set up your space properly as if in a wonderful restaurant and feel abundant.
Or you can cook for yourself a sumptuous and hearty meal and really be grateful for it.
4. Make do with what you have
You might not be able to go to all your bucket list destinations right away, but you can explore your own hometown or nearby places you can afford for now, and keep it in your heart that you are making the road for your other big trips, so let me just explore my city, or my country first.
There are so many ways you can tap into abundance.
Just don’t make yourself feel like you are in lack of things and enjoy even little things abundantly as much as you can.
Slowly you will find your life change and it will be the seeds of you bringing abundance into your life.
3. From ‘I have to pay my bills’ to ‘I get to pay my bills’
Stop thinking negatively and don’t complain about the money you have to pay whether it is for your bills or for your debts, or for whatever reason you have to part with money.
Instead, just let it flow through you and have the belief that it will come back to you in four folds, ten folds and hundreds of folds.
Think about it in terms of you getting to pay your bills because that means you have the capacity to pay for them.
Be grateful for the service you received which you have to pay back. It might be electricity, wifi, mortgage, car or anything.
When you’re driving your car which you paid through finance, be grateful for your car when you’re driving it
and when you have to pay for it every month, part with your money being grateful for all that your car allows you to do.
Maybe you were able to complete your education, but you incurred huge debt, or your health got restored, but you have a lot of debt, just be thankful for it while you repay your debts.
Make it your wholehearted intention to repay every bit of your debt as soon as possible and don’t ever keep any money that is not truly yours with you.
I and my mother are free from all debt now and at the start of the month, I keep a check on my money situation and pay my dues right on time.
It’s the first thing I do every month without any feeling of hesitation.
But I know it feels hard to part with money you earned and not be able to use it for yourself, but the more you hold it to yourself and find it difficult to part with, the more you generate a lack and doubt in your own potential.
I think a great part of an abundant money mindset is having the belief and trust in ourselves, and in our own future and taking the right action for it as we bring more gratitude into our lives.
4. From I can’t afford that to I can afford that
I see so many people sharing memes on Instagram or Facebook that shares about lack and about not being able to afford something thinking it’s just a meme, but you must really be cautious of it because whatever you’re sharing is what you’re believing and reaffirming even if it is just a joke.
Start paying attention to your self-talk relating to money.
Don’t ever say you can’t afford something.
This does not mean you become careless in spending your money and spend whatever you like that is beyond your budget, but just be mindful of your self-talk and your beliefs.
If you say you can’t afford something, then it will always be so.
Just remove the word I can’t afford from your life and do what you can that you can afford for now and be grateful with the firm belief that you can afford everything you wish for in life.
Even when we had very less money, and when my mother supported me financially with her small income and tuition that she used to give, me and my mother still went out for travelling.
The first trip we ever took was to Pokhara, Nepal back in 2013 and we had very less money back then.
I remember my mother counting how much money we had left for the many days that were left and us trying to make a budget, yet I am so amazed that my mother had the courage to make the trip possible.
Since that year we have always gone out for vacation no matter what, every year, even when we had less money.
We would just travel to nearby places and places which weren’t very costly.
We didn’t stay in lavish hotels, eat at fancy restaurants, or buy things, we just did what we could afford back then, but we made the trip happen and still were so happy and grateful for every moment.
I now think that when you start to do things you CAN afford in your own way and have the belief that you can and will afford everything in life, slowly your life starts to shift towards abundance.
Now I and my mother are able to travel without any financial constraints, and now I am taking my turn in supporting her and taking her on travels.
Next month I and my mother are going on our first-ever international trip and I am so grateful that I am able to afford this now, and all I can say is that it started with not saying I can’t afford it and believing that I can afford anything and I will afford anything I dream of and being patient with myself.
5. From Money is a source of evil to money is just a wonderful medium
Lastly, I had said this in my previous episode as well, and I say it in this one as well.
Money is not a source of evil, not having money is.
Money is just a medium which can be used in a good way or in a bad way.
And whoever uses money in a bad way, by being corrupt, by not caring about human values, or about the environment and about only looking for their own personal profits, even if they may have a lot of money, they still suffer from a scarcity mindset and are still poor and lacking in their life.
We might think that all wealthy people have an abundant mindset, but that is also not so.
Even some wealthy people who have a lot of are living in scarcity because they constantly think they don’t have enough and fear they will lose everything and hoard money,
And I don’t want you or me to be the kind of people who are rich but still poor.
I want us to be wealthy-wealthy, having real abundance in our lives.
And to have real abundance in our lives, we must start treating money as a wonderful medium, as our good friend and be grateful for all the uses money brings in our life and keep on allowing the free flow of money to happen in our life by allowing the inflow as well as the outflow.
So lastly I would say,
It all starts with being mindful of our money habits, our money beliefs, and our self-talk. And be mindful of our feelings when you’re handling, and giving away money and don’t bring in feelings of lack in your life.
We can still foster an abundant mindset no matter what our money situation may be now.
and slowly this will start to change our life.
Because we live with unawareness, we become unaware even of money and live in scarcity and fear.
This kind of mindset still tries to affect some of my actions still and bring in fear, but then I become mindful of it and change my pattern.
If it wasn’t for all the learning and unlearning about my money beliefs, habits and my money mindset, then I don’t think any aspect of my financial life would have changed.. and with it also my mother’s.
My mother would have still been working in a small private school with a meagre salary.
She would have still been giving tuition to make ends meet, and I would probably still be unemployed or even if I were working, I would have still been in a situation where I would be complaining about how there’s never enough money, how hard adult life is managing everything on my own, how I am not able to afford anything and just about all these things.
But we’re not. I have been able to change my financial situation, and though it might seem like it happened in just a few years, it actually happened gradually as I changed my way of life and as I shifted my money mindset.
I have been able to let my mom retire early and she’s now enjoying her life more than she ever did.
I truly believe that the little money mindset shifts were all the causes that helped me change my relationship with money and I shall continue to make more causes for good fortune.
And I hope you will too.
This much for today.
