Table of Contents
There are many articles out there on how to start a money making blog, but none that shares exactly how to start a blog that makes money in one year.
So today in this post I am going to share with you all you need to know about how to make money blogging in one year.
As for me I started blogging with no intention of making money and no idea about how bloggers make money blogging, but when I came to know of it, I thought even if make money I thought it would be ₹15000 – 20000 ($200-300) in extra income every month and I would be happy.
But as I decided to get serious with blogging and my traffic started to increase, the first income from my blog I received was $464 and I was so happy!!
And now within one year I can’t believe this small blog of mine is earning me more than $2500 (thats more than ₹2,00,000) of extra income every month just from display ads.
Blogging and learning about blogging has taught me so many different avenues about how to make money online, and has helped me actually earn passive income which I had heard so much about.
So in this post I thought I’d share how I started to make money from my blog within one year and how you can too.
With the right approach, strategy and mindset from the beginning, making money blogging within one year is very achievable.
But, mind you, its not easy. It requires effort, patience and a lot of work especially in the beginning, because in the beginning if you’re a complete beginner, you need to learn a lot of things.
However as you keep progressing, things start to get much much easy where the money starts to just keep flowing passively!
Honestly, blogging is really the best thing I did for myself.
Now, let me begin.

How to start a blog that makes money in one year
P.S Follow these 10 steps to know how to start a blog that makes money in one year and don’t miss out on any one of the steps. All are equally important.
Save for later 🙂
1. Pick a blog niche that makes money
A blog niche means the particular topic around which you will be writing content about in your blog.
Choosing the right blog niche is crucial if you want to make money blogging. If you don’t get it right and start blogging about anything and everything then your blog will go nowhere.
This is what happens to most blogs and that is why they don’t make any money blogging. Most take more than one year to figure it out, and only then do they start making money.
So if you want to make money blogging within one year, choose the right blog niche right from the start.
But what kind of blog should I start to make money?
If you’re having difficulty, try answering these questions.
- What are your interests? Is it fashion? Travel? Food? Self Improvement?
- Is it Health and fitness? Saving money? Gardening? Whatever it is you can start a blog around it.
- Who do you want your blog audience to be? Define your audience with some specific set of problems who can get tips from you.
When you define the right audience, choosing a blog niche becomes easier.
Here is my guide on how to pick the right blog niche in details.
Also, here are some profitable blog niches for ideas.
2. Decide on your domain name
Domain name is the name of your site, just like mine is vishakablone.com
Once you have chosen your blog niche, its time to decide on your domain name.
If you decide to go only for one niche then choose a domain name that has the main keyword of the niche included it.
For example, if you choose your blog to be specifically only about gardening then, try picking a domain that makes it clear what your blog is specifically about by having words like ‘garden’, ‘plants’, ‘growth’, ‘grow’ in the domain name.
The reason I am saying this is that, this builds more authority in the eyes of google and your readers who will know from your domain name itself- what your blog is about.
However if you think that you’re not going to blog on only one specific topic but around 3 or more, and would want to add other topics too later on, then I advice you to choose a blog name that allows you the flexibility.
It was for this reason that I went for my own name as my domain name because I wanted to write about many things and wasn’t really sure when I started. Choosing this domain name has allowed me to not get tied to a specific niche.
For example, had my domain name been something like blogbasics or such, then it would not make sense to write about things other than blogging tips.
P.S you will be able to check out whether your domain name is available or not and get a domain name for free if you choose bluehost as your web hosting provider (which I highly recommend for beginner bloggers)
If you can’t think of a good domain name now, it’s okay. You can skip this step for later and first get your own self hosted blog up.
You have the option to fill your domain name later.
For now, follow the next step.
3. Set up your own self hosted blog
A free blog is only meant for a hobby blog, but if you want to grow and make money blogging, going self hosted is important. You cannot hope to make money from a blog that is free like on wordpress.com, blogger or tumblr.
If your blog is not self hosted, it is like posting something on Facebook or youtube or in some else’s property.
If Facebook goes down, you will go down. But by being self hosted, you will own your site.
To set up your own self hosted blog, you need to select the right hosting. Web hosting provider is what will help you create your own website on the internet.
To quote Name cheap, “Web hosting is the process of renting or buying space to house a website on the World Wide Web.”
There are many web hosting providers, but the one I suggest you to go for as a beginner is Bluehost.
I have personally used Bluehost on my other blog and it hasn’t faced any issues and my blog is running smoothly.
Now, here are
4 steps to start your own blog
Step 1: Click here to get to bluehost and come back to this tutorial. I am here to guide you step by step.
If you are from India, you can follow the same process by going to bluehost.in
Step 2: select your plan
Select the ‘Basic’ set at just $2.95 a month.
Step 3: Register your free domain
Step 4: Create your account and select your package information
In the package information select the plan you want. Once again, I recommend you to go for the 1 year plan.
I recommend that you add SiteLock security and SSL because you don’t want spammers and hackers to steal your information, your domain and your beautiful website.
You will be needing that anyway, and if you buy it separately it will cost you more.
Next give your payment information.
Click submit and its done! You now have your own domain and your own website!
Now lets learn how you can log in to your wordpress blog.
4. Install and login to wordpress
Once you complete your payment, you will see a warm welcome email from Bluehost to get started with your WordPress blog to create your account and set your password.
Set your desired password for your Bluehost hosting account and congratulations! You’re done!
Your WordPress blog has now been installed automatically in the background.
To access your wordpress Blog dashboard, simply click ‘Log in to wordpress’ from your bluehost account once you log in. Once you’re logged in, this is the kind of dashboard you will see.
Once you create your wordpress blog, don’t forget to do these 11 things after starting a blog. (You can take note of it for later)
Next, you can now start customising your blog.
5. Customise your blog
Once you’ve logged in to your wordpress dashboard, its time to select a theme for your blog that will decide how your blog is going to look.
There are plenty of great free wordpress themes you can choose from in the theme library.
Go to Appearance (On the left side) >Themes> Add new
I suggest you to not stress over it or spend more than 30 minutes on this. It’s easy to get caught up in making your blog look perfect, but don’t waste your time on this too much in the beginning.
For now, just select a basic one which is mobile responsive and you’re good to go. Overtime you will find other good themes for your blog.
But once you’ve gotten a hang of wordpress, I suggest you to go for premium theme as they are more sophisticated and helps make your blog look more professional.
I have found in my experience that how your blog is structured and how it looks also determines how long your readers stay on the site.
If you like the look of my blog, then mine is from 17th Avenue designs.
Also here are some pretty wordpress themes for bloggers.
6. Write great content
Blogging really comes down to writing great content around your niche.
To write your first blog post, just go to Posts > Add new
Like I said, in the first year of blogging it is very easy to get caught up in little things like site design, fretting over the right theme, creating the right logo, stressing over Facebook pages, growing an Instagram account, or twitter for your blog, but trust me don’t waste time on it more than you should.
If you want to make money blogging within one year then you need to eliminate the unessential and just give the most time to WRITE GOOD CONTENT and learn about blogging.
Here is how to find endless blog post ideas fast without any stress.
Once I decided to get serious with blogging, I eliminated all these little things that were consuming my time and energy ad created a blog content plan.
I never created an Instagram page, I let go of twitter, I haven’t changed anything in the theme that I bought, and just focused on creating content and the only social media site I focused on was/is Pinterest.
Overtime my blog writing process has become faster and better and has helped me make money from my blog.

7. Don’t give up if you want to make money blogging in one year
Once you start creating good and right type of content for your blog based on your niche and do it for some time- maybe one month, two month, or three months, it might be that you will not see any significant traffic, and making money will seem very far along the line.
But here I should tell you that if you keep going, you will definitely be rewarded. Be consistent in posting blog post at all times. Aim for at least one blog post a week. If you can write more, then twice a week.
Keep going and don’t give up. The secret to a money making blog lies in not giving up.
If blogging were so easy, all bloggers out there would be making thousands of dollars from their blogs.
Almost all of the successful bloggers went through the process of doubt, confusion and went through the verge of giving up, but didn’t.
If you struggle to be consistent in blogging, here is how you can be a consistent blogger.
8. Invest in blogging education and resources.
My number one mistake when I first started blogging was not investing in my blog, and not wanting to spend anything on my blog for fear that it might not pay off.
I wish I invested in my blog sooner. This was one of the huge blogging mistakes I made as a beginner.
But once I invested, I actually got paid back the amount within few months, and started earning much more. It REALLY pays off to learn blogging, and getting the resources you need to grow your blog.
I have learned that you can only make money once you give money.
So now I no longer hesitate to spend money on courses and resources, because I take them as investing for my blog. I KNOW that it will then pay me back in 10 folds.
So I suggest you to always think of your blog as a business right from the start because that is how you can start a blog that makes money in one year.
The longer you delay in investing, the longer you delay your own blogging success.
Here are the best things I have invested for my blog that helped me make money blogging within one year.
- Pinteresting strategies by Carly
- Traffic transformation guide by Lena Gott
- Easy On Page SEO by Debbie Gartner
- Ivory Mix for pretty photos for my blog and Pinterest images (subscribed for one year)
- And now, currently I am taking the course Stupid Simple SEO to learn about SEO
Next, I want to take a course on email marketing and Affiliate marketing.
P.S It was only the first two courses I paid from my own money, and the rest of the courses I paid from the money I made from blogging.
(I always set aside 10% of my income for investment purpose. This is something I learned from the book, ‘The Richest Man in Babylon’. Its a must read)
9. Drive traffic to your blog
All the money that you will earn from your blog depends on your blog traffic, i.e the amount of visitors to your site.
It is only when you start to learn the strategies of blogging that you will start to drive traffic from your blog which in turn will help you make money blogging.
I have never known any blogger who has been able to drive traffic to their blog without investing in anything.
But once I invested and got serious about my blog, I got 12k page views in just one month.
Then 30k page views in two months and 60k page views in just three months.
Here I have written in detail about,
- How I increased by traffic to 30k pageviews in two months
- How I reached 60k pageviews in three months
This kept growing every month and I qualified for Mediavine in 6 months.
Now I get more than 100k page views every month. All of this happened in less than a year.
Yes you can drive traffic to your site in less than a year and start to make money from it.
10. Monetise your blog
And now here comes the main part. Once you start driving traffic to your site you can then apply to ad network to monetise your blog.
Now if you ask,
How many views do you need to make money on a blog?
10,000 page views is the minimum views you would need to make money on a blog. With 10k page views you can apply to the ad network like Ezoic and also get started with affiliate marketing.
You can always get started with google adsense right from the start, but I would recommend you to wait until you grow your site to 10k pageviews and more.
Google adsense gives money is peanuts, and that would not make any difference.
Once you grow your traffic, you can apply to Ezoic which requires only 10k page views.
I personally used ezoic for about 4 months. I had applied for it as soon as I hit my first 12k page views in just one month.
My first ever income blogging was from ezoic where I got $464 for around 30k page views. I was so happy!
Other ad networks once you start growing your traffic are:
- SHE media which requires 20k page views,
- Mediavine which requires 50k sessions (Around 60k-70k page views) and
- Adthrive which requires 100k page views.
Once your traffic increases your affiliate earnings also go up and you can monetise your blog with every other method and find success.
If you want to know what other ways there are to monetise a blog, check out this post on top 5 ways bloggers make money.
It is very much possible to monetise your blog in one year.

Lastly I would say that it will take some time in the beginning, but if you apply the right strategies and take the steps that I have mentioned in this post, nobody can stop you from making money from your blog in just one year!
